How To Select The Right Hydronic Heating System For Your Home

by Michael Eagleton

Did you know that choosing to install a hydronic heating system in your home is only half of the process? There are actually three different types of system that you need to choose between – slab, radiators and trench. In this article, we have taken a closer look at each of these options with the aim of helping you to determine which will best meet your needs.

Slab Heating

These systems are comprised of insulated polyurethane pipes, which are installed and then have your home’s concrete slab poured over the top. They are connected to a boiler, which heats water to the desired temperature (controlled via a thermostat) and circulates it through the pipework. The heat warms up the slab before radiating upwards into the rooms above.

  • Best suited to homes that are not under construction, as the pipework must be laid before the slab is poured.
  • The whole system is completely hidden beneath the floor, which provides your home with a clean and streamlined look.
  • Compatible with all flooring types, including: tiles, timber floorboards, natural stone and even carpet.

Radiators

These systems are mounted onto the walls of your home and are fed by a network of pipes installed either underneath the floor or in the roof space. They are connected to a boiler, which heats water to the desired temperature (controlled via a thermostat) and circulates it through the pipework. Once the water reaches the radiator, the heat radiates outwards into the room.

  • Best suited to established homes where tearing up the slab is a costly venture or when the home is on stumps (no concrete slab).
  • Radiators are available in an array of shapes and sizes, ensuring that you can find the perfect match for your décor.
  • Perfectly safe for use around the home, even if you have children or pets, as the radiators do not grow hot enough to burn.

Trench Heating

These systems are comprised of trenches that are installed beneath the floors of your home with a grille laid over the top. They are connected to a boiler, which heats water to the desired temperature (controlled via a thermostat) and circulates it through the pipework. Once the water reaches the trench, the heat radiates up through the grille into the room above.

  • Best suited to established homes or ones under construction where stumps will be used (no concrete slab).
  • You have a choice of mini or compact canals in timber or aluminium, ensuring a fantastic complement for your décor.
  • The grilles are compatible with all flooring types, will sit flush with the level of the floor and can be walked on with ease.

We hope that the information shared above has enabled you to determine which is that right hydronic heating system for your home. Although all three options offer similar benefits, it is important to keep in mind that they may not all be suitable for the restrictions posed by your home.
